Cycling

Cycling is perhaps the most basic, and at the same time most vigorous recreational sport one can undertake. It involves the riding of bicycles, unicycles, tricycles, quadric-cycles and other similar human powered vehicles. It requires great stamina (if you’re looking to do long distances and steep inclines), and much dexterity (you have to control your bike, and know when to change gears, just like a manual transmission car!) You will especially need dexterity if you are trying to master the unicycle!

The most used form of cycling would probably be bicycling. Bicycles are used for recreation at all ages. Bicycle touring, also known as cyclo-tourism, involves touring and exploration or sightseeing by bicycle for leisure whereas a brevet or randonnée is an organized long-distance ride. One can also go “off terrain” on mountain bikes or if they prefer, enter bicycle races. Professionally, there are of course famous athletic races such as the Triathlon and the Tour de France.

Not only does cycling as a replacement for driving help the environment, it also improves your cardiovascular health! Bicycling is especially helpful for those with arthritis of the lower limbs and who are unable to pursue sports such as running that involve more impact to joints such as the knees. Although primarily an outdoor activity, it has its benefits indoors as well. Today in most commercial gymnasiums, they provide classes called “RPM” (revolutions per minute) which involve a vigorous 45 minute workout on a stationary bicycle – be warned though, this workout is not for the weak of heart!

There are many types of fun to be had for those interested in bicycling, whether it be recreational, sport or professional. For more resources on cycling, check out Traveller Trail’s Travelogues or Directory!
