Trekking

Is water not for you? Perhaps you’re more of a land person – and if you want to throw camping into the mix, with quite a fair bit of traveling – then why not try out trekking?

Trekking - also referred to as tramping, bushwalking or even backpacking - is the combination of hiking and camping in one single trip. The trekker usually hikes into the outback (or back country) to spend one or more nights out there, amongst Mother Nature. They carry needed supplies and equipment which will aid them in their sleeping and eating necessities.

Most trips last over a weekend, to places not too far away. Most trekkers go in groups of two or more – they drive to a desired area, park their cars in designated car parks and head out into the forest, jungle or mountains to enjoy their journey. They will reach good ‘rest spots’ where they will set up camp, build a fire if necessary and sleep for the night before continuing their adventure the next day.

There are some groups who partake in long expeditions, which could last for weeks to a month. This is rare in beginner groups, and thus should not be undertaken by someone who has not been trekking before!

There is much risk involved when it comes to trekking, such as stamina and medicinal issues, not to mention the risk of the wild such as mountain lions, bears and coyotes. Always be sure you have a guide, professional trekker or experienced friend leading the pack when you head out!
