If you are feeling extra wild, you may like to literally ride on the wild side – such as in a jeep in the middle of a conserved or wild desert to catch a glimpse of wild life such as lions, tigers, zebras and hyenas just to name a few. These are better known as safaris. A safari is an overland journey. It usually refers to a trip by tourists to Africa, traditionally for a big-game hunt and in more modern times to watch and photograph big game and other wildlife as a safari holiday. It is where people can see with their own eyes and sometimes come up close with wild animals in their natural habitat. Some adventurers take it one step further and decide to camp out at night in the desert rather than drive through on a tour. It is still recommended to have an experienced guide if you decide to camp out at night, lest a bear surprise you in your tent at night! There is a certain theme or style associated with the word ‘safari’, which includes khaki clothing, belted bush jackets, pith helmets or slouch hats, and animal skins — like leopard's skin. This is probably due to the less modern times of hunting for sport but more often than not this is now frowned upon but not illegal. There are of course risks involved such as disobeying the rules about provoking or feeding the animals. The best thing to remember is to never panic and to always listen to your guide!
