Skiing

If you’re not a fan of the heat, but still want high altitudes and adrenaline rushes, then you are probably a winter sports person. The most common and fun recreational winter sport has to be skiing, or more generically – snow skiing.

Snow skiing is defined as a group of sports and activities that use skis. Skis are officially described as devices which slide on snow and attach with ski bindings and ski boots to people's feet. Even though they are similar, skateboarding is not considered a type of skiing, as its origins are not from traditional skiing (it originates from surfing and skateboarding).

There are many places to go skiing, and many different levels of difficulties. Most people travel up to the mountains for a good day of skiing. Some prefer clear less steep inclines, while others prefer steep inclines and obstacles such as a group of trees to ski their way through. As a result of choosing the more adventurous path, most people end up cutting their skiing vacation short due to broken limbs, usually a leg or two!

Some people prefer to see skiing as strictly a recreational sport or hobby. Others prefer to literally go that extra mile by taking it cross country. This requires great skill and endurance so it is not recommended for first timers! You do not want to end up with broken legs in the middle of nowhere, which could lead to all sorts of dangers if you can’t get help – such as going into shock from the cold or worse, frostbite!

If you choose to partake in skiing be it recreational or for cross country, then make sure you are well prepared and well informed! Start at the Traveller Trail's Travelogues and Directory, a great resource for all your skiing know how’s such as places to train and places to go.
